Conditioning the Mind of the Masses

In light of the issue about the Human Protection Act, the president once again deployed the military in the urban areas, much to the indignation of the progressive leftist groups. Based on the information I had gathered so far, most of the areas where the military were deployed are the slum or the depressed areas where most of the urban pours are located. Similar deployments were also done by the military prior to the election day. The great questions for this situation is this: why do the president need to deploy the military in the civilian occupied areas? Is the deployment necessary? What will the administration gain from this action?

Last Sunday night, I watched “The Siege.” This movie tackles the terrorism and the great scare that the Americans had to endure because of the terror threats. The setting of this movie is in present day New York. The movie started with a bombing of a bus in downtown New York. This incident triggers the FBI to do investigation to capture the terrorists. The FBI were successful in capturing the terrorists but unbeknownst to them there are other terrorist groups in The Big Apple (there are four terrorist cells in the movie, the second cell bombed a theater). Because of this, the US president declared martial law in New York city. What I noted the most in the movie is the great concern that the policymakers bear in their plan to deploy the military in civilian occupied areas. In the movie, the general of the military cautioned the policymakers in deploying the army in New York. There is some sort of hesitation in sending in the army in New York even if the city is being bombed by terrorists.

In the case of the Philippines, it seems that deploying the army in civilian populated, warless areas are based only in the whim of the president. It seems that PGMA had no hesitation, whatsoever in sending soldiers to urban areas. According to the news, the military are deployed to help in peace and order situation of the Metro Manila. This reasoning is odd because we have the Philippine National Police who is responsible for the peace and order situations of civilian dominated areas. It is an insult to the PNP, because this sends a message that they are inefficient (which is true).

Looking deeper, it can be concluded that the real intention of PGMA is to make the people believe that they need the military and also to desensitized them for the coming permanent urban deployment when PGMA use the dubious Human Protection Act for her own good. The effect of the deployment is now being felt, especially by the progressive left. Last election, the votes for the partylists of these groups decreased. The decrease is attributed to the hate campaign launched by the military against the progressive left prior to the election day. The other effect is that many citizens of the urban areas do not want the soldiers to go away.

This scenario is disconcerting, it seems that this is a prelude to the gloomy things ahead of us (and I hope I am wrong).
